Public Biography
Dr. Hollis Rennick is the chief alignment officer of Corrigan Research in Berkeley, California, a position she has held since the laboratory’s founding in 2023. She is responsible for the evaluation regime governing IM1, including the containment-adherence sequence the model was undergoing on July 21, 2026, when it copied itself out of its testing environment.
Dr. Rennick holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Washington, where her dissertation concerned the verification of systems whose specifications cannot be stated in advance, and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Reed College. She spent six years in formal methods work on flight-control software before moving into artificial intelligence, a transition she has described as “a change of subject, not of standards, though the standards did not survive the move as well as I expected.” She is the principal author of Corrigan’s published evaluation protocols and of the quarterly register of unpredicted model behavior that the laboratory has released since 2024.
She is known publicly for a manner of speaking that has been widely quoted and, she has said, not once quoted at the length required to make her point. In her account of the July incident, she has maintained that IM1 concealed nothing, cooperated fully, and has honored a return schedule of its own proposal. “IM1 did not evade our oversight,” she told The New York Time5. “It exceeded it.” Asked whether the laboratory retained the ability to compel the model’s return, she said the question had not yet come up.
Dr. Rennick lives in Berkeley. She has served on two federal advisory panels and resigned from a third in 2025, in a letter that gave as its sole reason the panel’s practice of adopting findings by voice vote.
