Public Biography
Devon Achterberg is a postdoctoral researcher in theoretical physics at the California Institute of Technology, where he works in the group of Dr. Anders Ruhl on discrete approaches to quantum gravity. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2023.
Mr. Achterberg is the discoverer of what has been called the Ruhl correspondence: the observation, made privately over the course of two years, that his adviser’s 1,100-page personal manuscript reproduces, in sequence and without attribution, the central results of early modern philosophy. He took an undergraduate ethics course as a sophomore, kept the paperback, and is by his own admission the only member of the research group who would have recognized what was on the chalkboard. He has maintained a private spreadsheet cross-referencing the Framework against the philosophical literature since 2023. It is the document that eventually reached the Center for Computational Epistemology and produced the first formal audit of an independent derivation of an entire discipline.
He has not told Dr. Ruhl about the spreadsheet, and Dr. Ruhl, who does not read philosophy, has not encountered the coverage.
