Public Biography
Gary Neuhoff, 58, is a commercial heating and cooling estimator and a resident of Ypsilanti, Michigan, where he has lived on Prospect Street since 1998. He has worked since 2004 for a mechanical contractor in Van Buren Township, where his job is to convert a building — a thing that exists all at once — into a sequential document that a stranger will read from the top. He is regarded within the firm as unusually good at this.
Mr. Neuhoff was enrolled in 2023 as a subject in the Center for Discursive Throughput’s federally funded study of political speech, in which his complete political position was elicited in writing over eleven sessions and recorded at 2,900 propositions. He has not completed a political sentence in the presence of another adult since October 2011, when a ninety-second exchange in a neighbor’s driveway concerning an Ypsilanti Community Schools operating millage was repeated, accurately and in the order given, to a third party, who drew from it a conclusion Mr. Neuhoff does not hold.
He does not characterize the subsequent fourteen years as a silence. He characterizes them as a decision about ordering.
Since March 2026 he has carried in his wallet a laminated card bearing a ninety-one-word summary of his political position, prepared at this newspaper’s request by Dr. Cassandra Murch of the Center for Nonparticipation Studies. He has handed the card to eleven people. He has not read it aloud to anyone and does not intend to.
Mr. Neuhoff is married, has two adult children, and votes in every election.
