Public Biography
Dr. Vanessa Prak is the vice president of applied reasoning at Microsoft, where she leads the team responsible for ReasonCheck and the company’s broader initiative to embed logical evaluation capabilities into its productivity suite. She joined Microsoft in 2019 after a decade at IBM Research, where she was a principal investigator on the company’s natural language understanding program.
Dr. Prak holds a Ph.D. in cognitive science from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Chicago. Her doctoral dissertation, “Inferential Chains in Degraded Input Conditions,” examined how human reasoners process arguments under cognitive load, which she has described as providing “a useful baseline for understanding what we’re up against.”
She is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and is known for discussing Microsoft’s AI products with a combination of genuine technical pride and a weary candor about the state of human argumentation that her colleagues find slightly alarming.
