Public Biography
Dr. Cyrus Drechsler is the Bristol County, Massachusetts medical examiner, a position he has held since 2011. He oversees the county’s forensic pathology operations from a regional office in Fall River and is responsible, by statute, for determining cause of death in all unattended, suspicious, or otherwise unexplained fatalities occurring within the jurisdiction, which encompasses New Bedford, Fall River, Taunton, and the surrounding municipalities.
Dr. Drechsler received his medical degree from Tufts University and completed his residency in anatomic and forensic pathology at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore. He is board-certified by the American Board of Pathology in both anatomic and forensic pathology and has been retained as an expert witness in more than two hundred criminal proceedings, primarily in the Massachusetts Superior Court system.
He is the author of the 2018 paper “Idiopathic Cranial Pressure Events in Adult Working Populations: A Twelve-Year Retrospective,” published in the American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology, which compiled and characterized 31 cases observed across New England in which adults of previously sound health experienced fatal intracranial pressure increases without identifiable medical cause. The paper has been cited 14 times. Dr. Drechsler has noted that he wishes the citation count were higher and that he believes the underlying phenomenon to be both more common and more politically distributed than the literature reflects.
